Smart Campus®

The Smart Campus® Facens concept began in 2014 and differs in that we consider our campus a great living laboratory for studies, implementations, and generators of solutions for Human, Smart, and Sustainable Cities. We consider our entire ecosystem and act in a multidisciplinary manner and integrate all the Innovation Centers and departments of the Facens University Center. Due to our pioneering spirit, we hold the Smart Campus® trademark registration, which has become a terminology used and replicated in universities and national and international complexes.

"Where cross my talents and passions with the world's needs, there is my way."– Aristotle

Axes of action

The projects developed within the Smart Campus® Facens are divided into nine axes of action, directly connected to the Pillars for Sustainability of the Facens campus, the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, and the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) concepts.

The Smart Lab is the Innovation Center responsible for the entire process of research, development, testing, implementation, analysis, and governance of the solutions implemented in the Facens Smart Campus.

Since the creation of the Smart Lab, more than 350 projects and different types of IoT (Internet of Things) devices have been implemented. All these achievements allowed the recognition of the campus as a Reference Center for IoT, Technologies 4.0 of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovations of Brazil.

The Smart Lab also has a role in research and dissemination of knowledge within the concept of Smart Cities, linking academia, the market, public sector bodies, and society as a whole, since it also generates academic content for undergraduate, graduate, elementary, and high school students, fostering the development of these students not only as professionals but also as citizens.

To manage this tool, there is an internal team specialized in the integration of the different communication protocols of the devices, among which LoRa, Bluetooth, ZigBee, Wireless, 5G, among others, are always up to date with the technologies of the market. To assist in Smart Campus® Facens Governance, the Smart Lab has a large DashBoard with information on projects implemented on campus, simulating a Control and Operations Center – CCO.

DashBoard also serves as a tool for students, professors, and researchers in project development, as it is a platform for data collection, storage, and transformation.

2022 Highlights

Achievements

Educational electronic spine

Monitoring the speed and number of vehicles circulating within the Facens campus. The operation of the technology is carried out using an infrared doppler.

Telemanaged water distribution via loT

In 2022, the implementation of the water consumption sectorization of the Facens campus was continued, through the installation of remote meters (Telemanagement with IoT), enabling water consumption sectorization; identification of environments with higher consumption; identification of possible hydraulic problems and water leaks; and real-time monitoring of reservoir levels and pressure.

Monitoring of soil parameters

Monitoring of environmental variables (soil humidity and temperature in different layers, solar radiation, temperature, air humidity, and atmospheric pressure), via IoT devices, with generation of consolidated data in DashBoard to evaluate the influence of the crop (chard and spinach) during its development cycle on the quality of the planting soil. The project was carried out by the agronomic engineering course on a construction site within the Facens campus.

Achievements

In 2022, 42 lectures/master classes were given for national and international audiences, referring to the concepts of Human, Smart, and Sustainable Cities.

In 2022, the Smart Lab was visited by more than 25 schools to demonstrate in practice the concepts of CHIS (Human, Smart, and Sustainable Cities).
